Academic Team
Sponsor: Ms. Leslie Carter

Do you know random trivia?  Do you like to answer questions and be involved in school?  If so, come participate in the Academic Team!

The Myrtle Beach High School Academic Team competes in four person squads answering questions in a format similar to Jeopardy! The competitions consist of three rounds. In round one the categories consist of: General Knowledge, Current Events, Sports and Pop Culture, Social Sciences, and Geography. The questions in this round carry point values from 10 to 50 points depending on the difficulty of the questions. In the second round point values are doubled to range from 20 to 100 points. The second round categories consist of Math, Science, Literature, History, and Humanities. The third and final round consists of one five part question, with each question valued at 25 points for a correct answer or -25 for an incorrect or nonresponse. In this round the team is allowed to confer among themselves. The Academic Team is always looking for new members! We usually practice one to two days a week and have competitions on Tuesdays from September to early November. If you feel like this is something you may enjoy, then please stop by room D104 to speak to Mrs. Carter.

Mock Trial
Sponsor: Miss Amanda Dimovitz

Many high schools and colleges nationwide are involved with this competition. Teams from six to twelve members are given approximately five months to research and study two sides of a hypothetical court case. In South Carolina, the cases alternate between a civil case and criminal cases.  Each case requires three attorneys and three witnesses from both the defendant and prosecutors sides and a bailiff is selected. With the help of area volunteer attorney coaches MBHS has been successful in qualifying for the state competition 6 out of the past 8 years.

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in politics or government should inquire about this club.
