Dear SEAHAWK Family,
Our first semester is almost complete and we have had a wonderful beginning! We have over 1250 students enrolled at this time and are continuing to grow! We have 9 new staff members that have made themselves at home and have been energized by the SEAHAWK spirit! The fall sports teams have come to a close. Each fall team made post season play-offs and ALL were wonderful representatives for MBHS. Winter sports are now under way so come inside and enjoy! Our Academic Team was declared the District Champion and recognized at the HCS Board meeting. MBHS had 46 orchestra students to make District this year and they have been selected to perform for the Winter Superintendent’s Conference in February. 28 students were named as to the AP Scholars for the 2008-2009 school year. We are truly a school that chooses to excel!
Our school-wide reading program “EVERYONE READS” or better known as “ER” has been a huge success. Students are asked to bring appropriate reading material with them to class each Monday and Wednesday (and sometimes on Friday) where they read for 20 uninterrupted minutes. Teachers monitor the reading while they, too, are reading. Students are able to access the newspaper on-line or read from classroom sets of books. Our intent is to improve the literacy level of all students and to model the “love” for books!
Selected seniors took a mock SAT on September through the District-wide computer-based SAT program known as TCA. The test included all 3 sections of the SAT: verbal, math, and writing. The test, including the writing, is scored and the results are back in the hands of the students within days. This gives our SAT coaches and guidance department the opportunity to meet with students and provide valuable feedback from these results. We will also be testing our juniors at a later date. PLEASE be sure to take advantage of the tutorial time on this program. Just 20 hours of time has proven to raise the SAT score 100 points! Contact Kim Alexander or Angie McCune for more information. Every student has access to this program, both at school and at home. MBHS offers SATACT Pep Rallies on the Friday before each test so get on board and raise your score!
Myrtle Beach High School is very proud of the accomplishments of our individual students as well as those received by the school. We believe and practice the vision that all students will leave MBHS with an opportunity to receive a diploma and move into our world as a vital, contributing citizens. Yes, SEAHAWK Family…”LIFE IS GOOD at “THE BEACH.”
